This isn't so much a question, but I just read one that appeared to be asking about Doji Dainagon's art and I just wanted to echo that I'd love to see more of that artist's work. True, it doesn't necessarily fall into what we've come to accept as the "L5R style" art, it's more in line with what William O'Connar produces (fairly 2-Dimensional), but ever since I saw her I've been entranced by the piece. It's not my favorite of all time or anything, but it's very appealing and I hope to see more!
That would be Rebekah Norris. I actually get a lot of comments a lot like your own. She’ll be around, she has a handful of work coming in future sets.
I was looking at Daidoji Narizane, and I'm confused as to how he's supposed to look tired. He's wearing a hawaiian print kimono and leaning back as though taking a casual 'not caring' break, not forward as though taking a 'sweet kami I'm tired' break. He looks like he's been away from the clan, certainly, but like he's been on vacation, not working. What am I missing?
Well I didn’t say he was suppose to look tired go back and re-read it, I said busy as in “no time to”, as opposed to tired as in “physically unable to”. I spent the bulk of it explaining why his hair is fading from dyed white to his natural brown. The implication is that he is so busy he doesn’t get to dye his hair properly. It’s a pedantic point that only a deeply traditionalist samurai would feel a sense of shame over.
I like the hawaiian t-shirt idea, lets go with spring break in the Colonies :D
One theme that is coming up in the new set are the sensei personalities. I know other clan's have not yet been up, but can you post wallpaper versions of Bayushi Kazutoshi (Scorpion), Hida Osote (Crab) and Tsuruchi Shichiro (Mantis)? Thanks in advance!!!
Hi. Just a question regarding Hector's Perfect Sacrifice(specially the lack of sacrifice in the scene depicted). When, and also who does it, is decided the final card title? If I Recall Correctly from comments of some authors, cards are commisioned with a working title which is not the final. Am I right?
So almost all the card names in the design document I get end up being changed, and often have some sort of joke or simple name liked Shosuro Ed, or Mirumoto Slick. Perfect Sacrifice I think started as perfect attack or some such. Oddly the image makes slightly more sense when you see the other card the character is in but that is sort of reaching a touch. We do sometimes try and catch it when the art doesn’t match the title or flavor text. For example there is a scout card coming eventually that does something PRE battle and gives a bonus in which the flavor text said “they are at our doorstep my lord!” But the image has him holding stolen maps. So we sort of looked at that and said….umm worst scouts ever? Thus the flavor got changed. The who does the titles is usually Reese or Shawn I think. I’ve never specifically asked, I think its a mixture of the two at times. The when is after final art is in and the cards are set into their frame.
So the short story is we try to catch stuff like that and often do, but there are times the final name doesn’t sync perfectly with the depiction. We’re only human, drunk, drunk humans.
Hey Guys! I was wondering if it would be possible for you guys to do a possible set of classes at Gen Con? I am trying to do art but still mainly new. I think others, especially more advanced artists would love to have an art class or art demo that week.
While Gen Con is a fantastic location for such a class, Steve is figuratively and somewhat literally swarmed the whole trip at his booth. He doesn’t even escape for food during the day, and instead sends out scouting missions to forage for Chick-fil-a.
I myself am no artist, I’m pure direction (as opposed to instruction) and continuity. I can however talk ad nauseum about the process, many of the the do’s and don’ts of the professional art industry, how to get noticed, what sort of websites to have ect ect. But I suspect know that is far less interesting than learning from Steve Argyle.
Hi Steve and Adrian. Talking with people from L5R Argentina community, we coincide that the art work from experienced clan's guidances are so much beautiful, so the question is: Could we have clan deck baker with this images in the future? And deck bakers with the art work of the Glory of the/Imperial Favor?
We agree they are pretty awesome. The creation of deck backers however is usually left up to the artist. Sometimes the company produces them but it tends to be fairly infrequently and not something the art director gets consulted on to much, but we’ll mention it.
Is there anyway not to have the Oracle of the Void link embedded in most of the Lion images? I can't open the pictures for: Kitsu Miro - Charles Urbach, Ikoma Yamahatsu - Stu Barnes,Ikoma Sido - Glen Osterberger,Ikoma Shika - Sergio Camarena, Akodo Uehara - Carlos NCT, The Celestial Sword of the Lion Clan - AKA Shinrai - Steve Argyle, The Marshaling Fields - Noah Bradley unlike previous works from L5Rart tumblr. Thanks!
Huh was experimenting with that feature didn’t think it would screw with all the images like that. I’ll turn them off.
*Later* So deleting the embedded link and reposting doesn’t seem to fix it. Still working on it.
