Embers of War start to spoil soon. Really excited to see what people think it was the first full set we really dug our teeth into, a lot of experience came out of it. Hope everyone enjoys it and more to the point I hope I can build a working Mantis Scout deck finally…daddy needs his medicine.

This blog is perfect for previewing art from future sets, but what about old art? I mean, really old art, such as which we never saw a hirez version because the internet was just nascent and download speeds were abysmal. I'd love to see large pictures of art from Imperial Edition or even up to Jade. Divisive stuff like KC Lancaster or classic from Mark Tedin (Yokatsu) or Anson Maddock (sp.?). How much of it hasn't been lost to time and HD crashes?

Honestly a lot of the original stuff has gone missing over the years. I actually have no archive that I personally maintain of old work, I basically have all the EE work. The company does maintain a storage and it’s pretty extensive but not always hirez. I’m told some big chunks went missing in two specific hard drive crashes that were seemingly not backed up. Though I hear Reese got some original hard copies from some storage location recently, maybe that will shore up the missing work eventually.

How does one get one go about getting a piece of art submitted for possible use and or signed on for commission work for l5r?

Well it’s a both a simple and hard process. See we have a ton of artists so the new freelance submissions have to really blow us away. We get them sent to our l5rartdirector@alderac.com address we get maybe 5 a day, and maybe once a week we find someone who we think might work out, and of those maybe 1 in 10 ends up sticking around. So what are we looking for? We are looking for a solid portfolio with solid understanding of color, composition, human figure drawing or landscape or creative monsters, we look for indications that you can churn out work at a reliable rate, and prior professional work is always pretty nice to see.

Getting a specific piece already created is a weird situation since we don’t know if someone else has the rights to it or even if the person claiming to have made it draw it. In general the few times we have done that it’s been from an established L5R artist who’s style we know.

Are you planning to attend any West coast kotei this year? (I was sad to miss Emerald Championship because you, Adrian, were there.) This question I guess applies to both A. Burton and S. Argyle

Adrian will be at the Vegas kotei tomorrow and the Salt Lake City one. Maybe the Seattle or Denver.

Steve might make the SLC one

Who is the artist that did the Crane woman holding the fan in the post about 8 pages back? (It's near the middle of the page right before all of the current Clan Champion artwork started getting previewed) Can we get more of his/her artwork? I think this was the same artist that did the Yasuki that was used on the L5R EE theme preview page for Economic Warfare. It's not hyperrealistic, but it seems to fit the setting really well. Maybe the flatness just reminds me of traditional Japanese art?

I think you are talking about Doji Dainagon by Rebekah Norris. She has some more work coming.  http://imperialassembly.com/oracle/#cardid=2070

I was looking at Togashi's Guidance today and a thought occurred to me: Why isn't Togashi a dragon (or some form of dragon/human hybrid) in it? I know it's been seen that he seems to have, on occasion, taken a human form, but as he's not exactly trying to conceal his identity in this visualization, why not appear in his "true" form (the one he took upon descending to the mortal realm from the celestial heavens)?

To be fair I didn’t direct that. But my answer to that is two fold. One he spent a thousand plus years in that form it’s a shape I see him being every bit as comfortable in as his dragon form. Two stylistically it would break with the visual of all the other Kami in their human forms guiding the champions. But it could have been fun, maybe in the exp 2 Kami Celestials if they ever get made? Who knows.

Hey Adrian and Steve, First off just wanna say you guys are rockin and I have been nothing but impressed with the work you all have done. Second thing, I was wondering and I know this won't be a big priority but, I am a huge fan of mons. Especially the family mons and minor clan ones. Is there any chance we'll see them redone in high res awesomeness? If they were done in the sweet ink brush style that the great clan ones were done in that'd be sweet too. I figured I'd just put in the idea :)

Well thank you, we’ve enjoyed the hell out of it so far.

Mons are a funny thing we dont get a budget for really anything beyond card art. As much as I’d like nice slick high ress reworks of all the mons for my art style guide, I have to settle for what we have which is a little older than I’d like. I could try to get Steve to redo all of them but he’s crazy busy to the point I’m amazed he gets anything done at all really.

Hi! I was wondering who the artist for Kitsune Denhei from EE was? Is there anywhere I can see a bigger picture of said artwork? Thanks! -james
